What Does It Mean to Be a Regulated Chiropractor in Alberta?
Protecting Public Trust Through Professional Standards
Chiropractors in Alberta are regulated under provincial legislation to ensure public safety, professional accountability, and high-quality health care.
Like nurses, dentists, physicians, and optometrists, chiropractors in Alberta are regulated health care providers. Under the Health Professions Act, chiropractors must meet strict requirements to maintain public safety and uphold trust in the profession. This includes proper education and training, practicing within a clearly defined scope, adhering to professional standards, and carrying liability coverage. Chiropractors are also required to meet ongoing competency benchmarks and be accountable to a regulatory authority.
That authority is the College of Chiropractors of Alberta (CCOA)—formerly the regulatory division of the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors. The CCOA ensures all chiropractors in the province meet the standards set by law. To practice in Alberta, a chiropractor must be registered and in good standing with the CCOA. This regulatory oversight ensures every patient receives care that is ethical, safe, and evidence-based.
